SANDRA FILIPPUCCI | Maternus 2010
earlier paintings | earlier sculpture | earlier prints
"Maternus" is influenced by rare 5,000 year old, Neolithic Valdivian sculptures I saw here in Santa Fe. The ones I saw - known as 'Palmar Types' - were all about the breasts. Elegant, minimialist, they were so powerful that I became fascinated about how breasts evoke a multitude of reactions and responses. These archetypal pieces are all wax encaustic paintings - some on paper, some on wood panels. This Series also includes encaustic monotypes, a new technique similar to printmaking because the wax is drawn on a heated plate and then one print - or monotype - is pulled from it.
